We invite you to join us for the meeting of the FxGS Family History Writing SIG online Zoom meeting on Monday night, May 6th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Xochi (pronounced Sochi) Kuo has prepared three manuscripts about her Chinese-American family. The audience for these stories is her family, and they were written especially for children. One of the manuscripts includes both illustrations and a narrative text. The other two manuscripts are currently only text, with graphics to be added later. When completed, each story will include both text and illustrations. If you have young children or grandchildren, their comments would be welcome. A short questionnaire that could be used to record comments is available if they wish to participate. Constructive criticism is always welcomed. We look forward to hearing your comments and suggestions. You can send copies of your written review notes to Xochi at gardenhousebooks@gmail.com. We are looking for manuscripts to review at the 2024 meetings on Nov 4 and Dec 2. Your participation is important in holding the meetings and sharing your experience in preparing manuscripts for family, friends, community archives and libraries, and publication. We are all at different levels of writing skills and experience, and we enjoy helping each other. Whether questions of grammar, comma usage, spelling variations, or those fiendish footnotes, we welcome the opportunity to discuss and debate the issues. If you wish to be added to the members‘ list to receive a copy of the draft manuscript by email and join the online meetings, please send your name and email address to SIG co-leader Sean Furniss at Sean.Furniss@gmail.com. Join us at the online Zoom meeting and see how historical context can be incorporated into family history narratives. See how two stories can be told at once, placing the protagonist in the center of the action, adding suspense, injecting drama, and using dialogue to move the story forward.

We invite you to join us for the meeting of the FxGS Family History Writing SIG online Zoom meeting on Monday night, June 3rd from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, to review a manuscript prepared by Jenni Ford. While interviewing family members, she was told that her grandmother‘s uncle, Elbert Smith, was convicted of shooting at a man while he was in a drunken stupor. The bullet missed his intended target, but killed Elbert‘s first cousin, a teenager who was standing behind the man who was targeted. Jenni went on a quest to prove or disprove the story and fill in the blanks. We are looking for manuscripts to review at the Nov. 4 and Dec. 2 meetings. If you have a manuscript you are writing for your family or publication, members of the Family History Writers’ Special Interest Group would enjoy reading and reviewing your family narratives to help you to make them even better. We are all at different levels of writing skills and experience, and we enjoy helping each other. Whether questions of grammar, comma usage, spelling variations, or those fiendish footnotes, we welcome the opportunity to discuss and debate the issues. We invite you to join us for the meeting of the FxGS Family History Writing SIG online Zoom meeting on Monday night, October 7th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, to review a manuscript prepared by Fran Millhouse, The Loss of the Mechanic. The steamboat Mechanic, built in Marietta, Ohio, was the steamboat that Lafayette was on when it struck a submerged tree and sank in the Ohio River. No passengers were lost, but Lafayette lost his carriage and the bags of “fan mail” from his tour of the U.S. It was 1825, and he was on his way to Cincinnati.
