NARA Scanning Project - What's Next!

Arthur Buck | Published on 12/8/2023

Hello FxGS Innovation Hub volunteers-

We've now finished the 1890 Veterans Census project!  Thank you all! Please read the schedule update below.

Next up, we're returning to the pension files for Black soldiers in Regiment 2, Company B who mustered in Arlington in 1863.  There are 130 files in this set.  Catherine passed on this link with some history of the 2nd infantry regiment.

I've received word that the Innovation Hub will be closed from Dec 25 - March 1 due to renovations happening at NARA.   When I get the confirmation that they are starting to schedule Innovation Hub scanning dates for the spring, I'll send out an email with our dates.  We plan to continue with the scheduled of approximately every two weeks, up to five scanners reserved.

We have now collectively scanned over 20,000 pages!  Congratulations and a big thank you to everyone who has helped.

Happy Holidays to All!

Susan

I had a particularly interesting large file to scan during my last visit, for Elhanan W. Wakefield.  It wasn't until I got home and did a little sleuthing on the internet that I discovered he was none other than the founder of Wakefield Chapel in Annandale, and, I presume, the man for whom Wakefield Chapel Road was named!  The first bio I found online stated incorrectly that Wakefield was a proud man, and never filed for a pension.  I respectfully suggested that his bio be corrected to indicate that he did indeed apply for and receive a pension:
