German SIG September Meeting

Arthur Buck | Published on 9/19/2023

On Monday Sept 18, 2023 at 1:00pm, the German Special Interest Group held their first meeting of the 2023-2024 season at the Pohick Regional Library,6450 Sydenstricker Rd, Burke, VA. Attending were 21 people, including a few newcomers.

This month we had a lively discussion covering various topics. From this discussion have come a few interesting topic ideas for future meetings, including navigating various genealogy websites and search engines, how to find records that are not online, reading old German script, performing cemetery analysis to find relationships, genealogy tourism to find new information and sharing research success stories and German family history discovery.

Art Buck of the Fairfax Genealogical Society joined our meeting and gave a overview of the Fairfax Genealogical Society and its mission. Look for more information on the website.

We invite all people interested in German genealogy to join us. We generally meet September through May from 1 pm to 3 pm on the 3rd Monday of the month (except when a Federal Holiday occurs on Monday, then we meet on Tuesday of that month).

At the next meeting on Monday, 16 October 2023, the topic will be German farm names and their relationship to surname changes - a peculiar custom in northwest Germany.
