Special Note: At the beginning of this meeting there will be a vote by the society regarding the following motion (approved by the executive board): The Fairfax Genealogical Society will pursue a merger with the Mount Vernon Genealogical Society by December 31, 2023. Using Photos and Other Images to Enhance Your Family Story - Leo Dougherty
The purpose of this presentation is to help identify and use photos and other visuals to better tell your family story. Perhaps you have old photos that you are wondering about – who are those people and what are the stories behind those faces? This is a challenge to which everyone can relate. Photos of ancestors add a human dimension to their story. We'll explore possible public sources for finding your ancestors’ photos. The possibilities are not limited to photos of people, but also places where they lived, the ships that brought them here, where they served in the military and other life events. In addition to photos there are a variety of other useful images that can be found in historical publications. We will discuss the wide range of sources available for finding these materials that can be included in our family history document.
Leo Dougherty
Leo Dougherty grew up in the Eastern Pennsylvania coal region. After a stint in the Army he attended and graduated from Penn State University. He spent 33 years working in the U.S. Census Bureau on various aspects of census and survey operations. For most of his career he worked in providing training and technical assistance on census operations to developing countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The latter part of his career at Census was spent in the Geography Division managing the distribution of, and support for, the Bureau's public geographic products. His interest in genealogy stems from a life-long interest in history and a desire to understand the lives of his ancestors in the context of the larger history. He has been a member of the Mount Vernon Genealogy Society since 2006.
